Founded in 1865, Bowie State is Maryland’s oldest historically black university and one of the ten oldest in the country.  In 1988, Bowie State College became Bowie State University (BSU), reflecting significant growth in academic programs, enrollment and community service. Bowie State has become a comprehensive university, offering 23 undergraduate majors, 19 master's degree programs, 14 specialty certificates and two doctoral programs in a broad range of disciplines. And has gained recognition as a leader in the education of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In 1995, Bowie State won an 11-year, $27 million award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/National Science Foundation, becoming one of only six national Model Institutions for Excellence in STEM.

The Department of Nursing has for almost 30 years, cultivated naturally caring people into dynamic nursing professionals. The Bachelor of Science program, one of the most respected in the region, features a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory housed in its Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing, a premier facility for transformational learning. The simulation lab is designed to flexibly change as new educational strategies emerge. Combined with hands-on experience gained in community-based internships, students prepare to graduate with the skills and knowledge to be an exceptional nurse. BSU offers the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nursing (BS and MS). The Bachelor of Science program in Nursing accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Inc. and approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. The Master of Science in nursing (MSN) degree program, also fully accredited by ACEN, prepares professional nurses for advanced practice roles as family nurse practitioners or nurse educators, as well as doctoral study.
