HIV Testing and Counseling

Purpose: To help providers improve their HIV test counseling skills to reduce HIV transmission and promote
early diagnosis.

Preferred Audience: This training is for all healthcare professionals, including health educators, mental health providers, substance abuse professionals, social workers, case managers, and public health professionals.

Program Objectives: Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Compare routine testing and risk-based testing strategies.
• Assess a patient’s risk for HIV infection.
• Identify ways patients/clients can reduce their risk.
• Describe techniques for client-centered counseling.
• Demonstrate pretest and posttest counseling for rapid HIV testing.
• Provide results of HIV test to clients.
