Most people with HIV in the United States are now 50 or older, and cognitive concerns in this group rarely come from a single cause. This session uses a short clinical framework, Assess, Intervene, Refer, to work through a composite patient case. It covers a brain health workflow for primary care clinics; bedside cognitive screens and who can administer them; modifiable dementia risk from the 2024 Lancet Commission; a review of brain-active medications; and the referral pathways for sleep, hearing, and pain that our clinics are working to strengthen.

Objectives

  • Assess cognitive concerns in an older adult with HIV on antiretroviral therapy.
  • Intervene on modifiable dementia risk as treatable traits.
  • Identify referral pathways to strengthen when cognitive concerns require intervention.
