This session is part of NAHEWD's national webinar series Bridging HIV and SUD: Innovations in the Field. The series will highlight various innovative models and approaches to treating substance use disorder (SUD) in people at risk for and living with HIV. Dr. Axelrath will discuss best practices in the treatment of non-abstinent patients with opioid and stimulant use disorders. Based on the American Society for Addiction Medicine guidelines and clinical experience, these best practices can be implemented in any primary care or specialty addiction treatment setting. 

Objectives

  • Identify non-abstinence-based goals of substance use disorder treatment.
  • Describe potential benefits of treatment retention for non-abstinent patients.
  • Apply recommended strategies to enhance engagement and retention of non-abstinent patients in varied clinical settings.
