During this session, a pediatric infectious disease expert will provide an overview of current WHO, NIH, and CDC guidelines for HIV and breastfeeding.

Objectives

  • Describe current WHO, NIH, and CDC recommendations regarding breastfeeding for individuals with HIV who are virally suppressed on effective antiretroviral therapy.
  • Evaluate clinical and treatment-related factors, including ART adherence and viral load, that influence the risk of HIV transmission during breastfeeding.
  • Apply updated national guidelines to counsel individuals with HIV on infant feeding options using evidence-based, patient-centered approaches.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to support consistent counseling, medication adherence, and psychosocial considerations aligned with current HIV care standards.
