This 4-day workshop teaches client-centered approaches to HIV testing and counseling that include: basic and intermediate HIV terminology, client-centered counseling techniques, introduction to Motivational Interviewing, HIV epidemiology, overview of HIV test technologies and administration, and immersive HIV Test counseling simulations. This training is ONLY for Illinois residents working as; healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, mental health providers, substance abuse professionals, social workers, case managers, and public health professionals who are seeking to become HIV test counselors and are not currently receiving Ryan White Part B funding (RWPB). Participants who satisfactorily complete all program requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion. If they transition to work in a Ryan White Part B-funded organization, they may submit their Certificate of Completion to IDPH and be issued an IDPH-certified HIV Test Counselor number.
Objectives
- Review HIV epidemiology at the local and state-level
- Compare routine, anonymous, and confidential risk-based testing strategies
- Assess a patient’s risk for contracting HIV
- Review behavior modification strategies to assist clients in reducing their risk of contracting HIV
- Describe techniques for client-centered counseling
- Demonstrate pre-test and post-test counseling for rapid HIV testing
- Demonstrate how to administer the HIV rapid test technology
- Providing the results of the HIV test to clients
- Complete a simulated HIV testing & counseling session
