Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of Motivational Interviewing (MI), the role of ambivalence in behavior change, basic MI skills, and how to identify and elicit change talk with clients. 

Objectives

  • Understand the history and development of MI.
  • Define ambivalence and describe the role it plays in client behavior.
  • Describe the spirit of MI and guiding principles.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic MI skills (e.g., OARS).
  • Identify and cultivate change talk in interactions with clients.
