The Motivational Interviewing (MI) training program is designed to provide MI training to anyone working with people with or at risk of HIV/AIDS throughout the state of Virginia. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of MI, the role of ambivalence in behavior change, basic MI skills, and methods for identifying and eliciting change talk with clients. The training will provide an opportunity to learn and practice MI skills, followed by a demonstration of the student’s proficiency in MI skills.

Objectives

  • Understand the history and development of MI.
  • Define ambivalence and describe the role it plays in client behavior.
  • Describe the spirit of MI and guiding principles.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic MI skills (e.g., OARS).
  • Identify and cultivate change talk in interactions with clients.
