Through case studies, this workshop will assist allied health and human service providers in better responding to ethical dilemmas that arise in providing services across fields of practice. Using HIV/AIDS as a case study, the workshop will explore legal and ethical issues, individual and institutional attitudes that may affect services, opportunities to provide culturally competent services, and a framework or model for ethical decision making.

Objectives

  • Identify the range of ethical dilemmas and professional boundaries in public health and human services. 
  • Learn a model for ethical decision-making.
  • Increase awareness of the complicated nature of professional boundaries
  • Identify risks that may affect professional liability.
  • Identify what policies, procedures and protocols are recommended to address the ethics in a variety of contexts.
  • Understand culturally competent practice throughout the process. 
  • Learn how holistic approaches enhance HIV prevention and care
  • Build skill through of whole-person engagement strategies
  • Explore case studies and community-driven initiatives to support learning
  • Develop action plans aligned with state-level public health goals
