Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) was founded as the State Normal College for Colored Students, and on October 3, 1887, it began classes with fifteen students and two instructors. Today, FAMU, as it has become affectionately known, is the premiere school among historically black colleges and universities.  Prominently located on the highest hill in Florida’s capital city of Tallahassee, Florida A&M University remains the only historically black university in the eleven-member State University System of Florida. Originally designed to meet the needs of the underrepresented and the underprivileged, Florida A&M University continues to serve the citizens of Florida and the world through its provision of pre-eminent educational programs.  The University offers 54 bachelor's degrees, 29 master's degrees, three professional degrees, and 12 doctoral programs in a wide range of academic areas.

Health Sciences

The School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) is one of three health professional schools at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). The school was established in 1982, in recognition of the need to provide access to quality education in a group of rapidly growing health professions. The newly established Division of Health Science in the School of Allied Health Sciences offers three bachelor of science degrees; serving the needs of all School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) undergraduate students pursuing one of two pre-clinical tracks in: Health Science Pre-Occupational Therapy (HS Pre-OT), Health Science Pre-Physical Therapy (HS Pre-PT), or the recently implemented non-clinical Health Science General (HSG) degree track. Overall, FAMU ranks as the number one producer of African American allied health professionals in the State of Florida

Pharmacy

The School of Pharmacy was organized in 1951 as part of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College (FAMC). The designation, College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, was made in 1985 in recognition of the expanded role and mission of the College in professional and graduate education. The evolution of the College has witnessed the initiation of pharmacy education with just one student in the beginning to now being one of the largest colleges of pharmacy in the country. The College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is a professional college with limited enrollment and highly selective admissions. The mission of the College is to produce highly qualified pharmacy practitioners who take an active role and responsibility in the delivery and outcomes of pharmaceutical care. Programs of Study include the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in pharmaceutical sciences including harmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, environmental toxicology (Ph.D. only) and health outcomes and pharmacoeconomics and the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
