Description:

(Recorded 1/9/23)

More than one million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide. Untreated STIs have a significant impact on sexual and reproductive health and can lead to pregnancy complications, infertility, and cancers as well as increase HIV transmission. Rising antimicrobial resistance by gonorrhea is a major threat to reducing the global burden of STIs. STIs and their complications are associated with stigma and considerable social and economic consequences. The development of STI vaccines is an important public health goal. This presentation reviews the current experience with HPV vaccine introduction, lessons learned for future vaccines, and the latest evidence for the simplification of vaccination schedules. The presentation also addresses the vaccine development pipeline for HSV, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, reflecting on areas of progress as well as technical challenges in development. Finally, the presentation summarizes research priorities for implementation including considerations for target populations and delivery strategies in different settings, as well as the implications of rising vaccine hesitancy.
